Moving is a great time to get rid of things you no longer need or use. And when you give yourself enough time to clear the clutter in advance, it can dramatically affect your move in positive ways. In fact, if you’ve lived in the same home for decades and haven’t really gotten rid of much during that time, it’s possible that you could move into a smaller home by the time you’re done decluttering!
In addition to more space, though, decluttering also offers opportunities to both save and make some cash. Whenever we have too much clutter, there’s a good chance that for every ten items stored away that you haven’t needed in ten years, there is one item that you’ve needed and haven’t been able to find. So whether you wasted time looking for it or bought a new one, with less clutter you’d be more likely to know where it is in the first place.
And of course, you can make money by selling anything that others may be able to use through Craigslist, eBay, Facebook, yard sales, or any other of the many ways available to us these days to sell our stuff. For anything useable but not sellable, research local charities to donate your items to.
Then there are all of the things that aren’t even useable anymore. Sometimes things just need to be thrown away or recycled. While this may not earn you cash (and in fact could cost you dump or removal fees), the peace of mind created by getting rid of useless items is priceless.
But here’s the best part about getting rid of stuff. It will make your move much easier:
- If you are moving yourself, you’ll save money by needing a smaller moving truck. And think about all of the moving boxes you won’t need to pack! And all of the padding, newspaper, and bubbles you won’t need to procure.
- If you are hiring a moving company, they will charge less since their movers won’t have to move as many boxes and they won’t need as much space in the moving truck.
- Whether you are moving yourself or hiring a mover, the move will be faster and easier the less stuff you have. Spend less time loading and unloading and more time settling in to your new home.
All in all, the advantages to decluttering drastically outweigh the time and effort it takes to do so. Start the New Year off right and make a resolution to simplify your life. Happy New Year and Happy Decluttering!
